In light of the decision by the cabinet to allocate an egalitarian prayer area near the Kosel, one that will permit services without a mechitzah, the Moetzas Gedolei Hatorah of Agudas Yisrael is meeting on Wednesday, 15 Adar-I. Kosel Rav Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz has been invited to attend.
One wonders why they are meeting now since MKs from Yahadut Hatorah insist they consulted with gedolei yisrael before the cabinet reached its decision, hence one is led to believe the admorim shlita have already weighed in on the matter. In addition, the decision was already made and even if the rabbonim wish to change this reality, it will not be a simple process at this stage.
The Degel Hatorah-affiliated Yated Neeman newspaper quotes POnavezh Rosh Yeshiva, HaGaon HaRav Berel Povarsky as saying “Wake up! They are trying to destroy us!”, adding clearly Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu wishes to be counted among the Reform.
MK Menachem Eliezer Moshes of the Agudas Yisrael faction of Yahadut Hatorah spoke with Kol Chai Radio’s Mordechai Lavi Wednesday morning. He explained the decision by the High Court to permit a Reform convert to toivel in a Beersheva mikve with a Reform beis din and PM Netanyahu’s newfound affinity for Reform leaders compels the council to convene to decide on a plan of action.
