It was a stormy plenum session when MK (Labor) Stav Shafir commented on a statement from Minister of Education (Bayit Yehudi) Naftali Bennett, who has decided to dedicate next year’s education system to mark the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Jerusalem’s Old City, labeling it the Year of United Jerusalem.
Shafir tweeted “the education minister decided to enlist the torah to give a G-dly approval stamp to his political interests”.
MK (Bayit Yehudi) Shuli Muallem responded it appears Shafir does not realize that there is Sefer Bereshis before Sefer Shemos for Shafir stated “The education minister should know that before the [giving of the] torah we came here from Egypt”.
After mounting criticism against her, Shafir amended her post on twitter saying “Am Yisrael stood together at Mt. Sinai first, not Jerusalem” to which Muallem replied again, “forgive me for nitpicking but did you ever hear of Akeidas Yitzchak for example. That took place a bit before Mt. Sinai”.
