Judge Plans To Unseal Documents In Sheldon Silver Case

silvA judge says she plans to unseal redacted versions of documents she kept secret just before the trial of ex-state Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver for fear they would taint prospective jurors.

Manhattan federal Judge Valerie Caproni said Thursday she’ll issue a written ruling next week and delay releasing documents for another week afterward so parties can appeal.

The 71-year-old Democrat was convicted in November in a $5 million corruption case. Prosecutors said he traded favors to enrich himself and then lied about it. He is scheduled to be sentenced April 13.

Lawyers for The New York Times and WNBC-TV asked the judge to unseal documents pertaining to evidence excluded from trial.

Silver’s lawyers had opposed the unsealing on grounds they could jeopardize a fair trial if Silver wins an appeal.
