It is a waste of bullets firing in the air when attacked by Arabs. The bochur should have fired his gun aiming at the Arab stone-throwing mob. At least his gun, even sought it was confiscated, would be put into a good use.
The bochur made a terrible mistake; he let Arab stone-throwers to live another day, so they will be a threat to more Yidden in the future.
All big talkers 1 & #2.
First of all when you learn to use a gun, they teach you not to fire into the air, you fire into the ground first.
Why?
Because if you fire into the air, the bullet will come down and may cause damage, instead fire into the soft ground where it will embed.
If the bochers lives were in danger after the police investigate, they will give back the gun providing it is legal.
