Following the dispute surrounding the River Restaurant in Ra’anana, the city’s chief rabbi, Rabbi Yitzchak Peretz Shlita came in person to affix a mezuzah on the entrance.
The restaurant has changed ownership and the new owner, who is Shomer Shabbos, decided to close the restaurant on Shabbos. This led to a call to boycott the restaurant on social media by Meretz Councilwoman Edit Diamant as the restaurant was a favorite spot of many non-religious Jews on Friday night.
Interestingly, many non-religious Jews came out publically against Diamant, defending the new owner’s right to close on Shabbos. In addition, her own Meretz party distanced itself from her campaign. Ultimately, she removed her post from social media.
