Chareidi Faction Leaders in Knesset Examine Coalition Agreements

gafneThe heads of the chareidi factions in Knesset convened on Wednesday, 24 Shevat to review coalition agreements with an emphasis on education. Taking part in the meeting were Minister Yaakov Litzman, Minister Aryeh Deri, MK Moshe Gafne, MK Uri Maklev and Deputy Education Minister Meir Porush.

In addition to patting themselves on the back for the accomplishments achieved to date in the 20th Knesset, the lawmakers delved into the agreements towards determining their roles and that of the coalition vis-à-vis chareidi mosdos and the government’s right to compel the inclusion of secular subjects into the curriculum as a prerequisite to receiving state funding for schools.

This was set into place during the previous Knesset by the Yesh Atid and Bayit Yehudi parties, which made receiving funding contingent on accepting the state curriculum regarding subjects viewed as essential in the education of all children.

To date, the Ashkenazi chareidi school systems have vehemently opposed any and all state involvement in the education curriculum of its children in line with the position of Gedolei Yisrael Shlita. Shas has been far more lenient as many if not most Sephardi chareidi schools are more willing to accept this condition and include these subjects into a school curriculum.
