Addressing a forum of Israeli ambassadors from around the world in Jerusalem on Sunday, 21 Shevat, Foreign Minister Director-General Dr. Dore Gold stressed the Golan Heights will remain Israel’s forever regardless of what agreements might be reached. The Golan was liberated by Israel during the 1967 Six Day War.

Addressing a number of other current event issues, Dr. Gold stated Israel has no interest whatsoever to become involved in the ongoing civil war in Syria. Regarding the PA (Palestinian Authority) and negotiations, he stated Israel was never going to return to the pre-1967 borders, which would result in once again dividing Yerushalayim. He feels PA Chairman Abu Mazen remains more interested in acting unilaterally rather than reaching agreement by negotiating with Israel even with US involvement.

On a regional level, Gold, who is a Middle East historian, explained that Jerusalem and some of the neighboring Arab nations share mutual interests and this might lead to cooperation with is mutually beneficial to all parties. He pointed out that in his opinion, Iran remains a more serious threat than ISIS.
