The Jewish Defense League is considered to be a violent, racist, and extremist far-right political group founded by Rabbi Meir Kahane in the United States. In 2001, the FBI declared the JDL to be a “violent, right-wing terrorist group.”
The JDL has been inactive for years, but Meir Weinstein, JDL leader from Toronto, said he would be setting up a branch combat the rise of “radical Islam” in Quebec.
Rabbi Reuben Poupko of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) said, “There is no need for a Jewish self-defense group in Montreal.”
In August, after incidents of anti-Semitic vandalism in Montreal, Weinstein organized a meeting to gauge interest in reviving the JDL after years of inactivity. 50 people are reported to have attended that meeting.
Rabbi Poupko claims that local authorities have and are capable of successfully dealing with anti-Semitic incidents and the JDL’s work is unnecessary.
