NYC: Snow-Covered Hydrants Hinder FDNY During Eatery Fire

A popular Latin restaurant has been destroyed after officials say a fire ripped through the Hell’s Kitchen building, as was reported on Sunday by YWN.

Firefighters were hampered in their efforts due to snow-covered hydrants near the burning Empanada Mama restaurant on Ninth Avenue between West 51st and West 52nd Streets.

Firefighters were eventually able to clear the hydrants and contain the fire. The New York City Fire Department has asked residents to clear the hydrants for safety reasons.

Empanada Mama assistant manager Stuart Bragg says the fire began about 9 a.m. Sunday in the boiler room of the restaurant. The blaze destroyed the storefront.

A first-floor check cashing store and some apartments above the restaurant were also damaged.

No one was injured.
