New York City is working to protect its beaches as the snowstorm approaches, bringing a threat of coastal flooding.
Among other things, the parks department is fortifying key locations along Coney Island and Staten Island beaches.
In the Rockaways, storm panels are being installed in baffle walls designed to protect the area from windblown sand and flooding.
The city says many of its beaches already have “substantial protection” against erosion because of sand replenishment done in 2013.
