New York has a new way of fighting back against motorists who evade tolls.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says that effective Wednesday, the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles has the authority to suspend the vehicle registration of any motorist who fails to pay five tolls within a period of 18 months.
The state says it found nearly 35,000 cases of toll evaders racking up five or more unpaid toll violations within 18 months—depriving the state of more than $16 million a year.
Cuomo says people who cheat the system unfairly burden law-abiding New Yorkers who pay their fair share.
The DMV proposed the plan last fall, but it had to go through the state’s regulatory approval process.

16 million savings how about cracking down on all the illegal people getting Free Healthcare for their kids, free food stamps, free housing etc. It’s costing NY residents Billions and these people break our laws and get better service then native Americans. CRAZY
Thanks Morty Katz, #1, for saying what some of us dared to think! It’s sickening! We wooses are paying mega-fortunes for our health insurance plans – to the tune of $25,000 per year – and then we have limitations placed on our choices of medical/health care providers and then finally utterly ridiculous co-pay fees! It’s tyrannical to see government insured patients with zero limitations get their preferred service! It’s as though we’re paying for their insurance – something like the dinim that apply to ones ownership of an עבד עברי.
Lets raise a toast for the State of New York! Where City bridges and tunnels cost upwards of more than $15, where potholes and scratchy State roads are common, and where one of the highest gas taxes in the nation doesn’t improve anything in the budget related to transportation or highway conditions.
