New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says the city’s streets have never been safer.
The Democratic mayor on Tuesday said traffic and pedestrian fatalities dropped to their lowest level in 2015, ever since they began record keeping in 1910.
De Blasio touted the success of his traffic safety program dubbed Vision Zero Program for the decline in deaths. He says traffic fatalities are down 22 percent since the program was launched in 2014.
Officials said there were 231 traffic fatalities in 2015, 66 fewer than the 297 fatalities that occurred in 2013. They called the 134 pedestrian deaths recorded in 2015 a “historic low.”
The mayor also announced $115 million in additional funding for the safety program and a new initiative to test safer left turn designs.
