Police say a New York City officer who was shot in the ankle while responding to a large street fight in the Bronx was wounded by friendly fire.
Officer Sherrod Stuart was hospitalized following the Saturday morning brawl that involved guns, bats and knives.
Police say another officer shot Stuart while exchanging gunfire with Christopher Rice, who was struck four times and hospitalized in serious condition.
Rice was arrested Monday on charges of assault, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon. It wasn’t clear if the 19-year-old Rice an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
Police Commissioner William Bratton says Rice had been arrested and released hours before the brawl following a fare-beating arrest Friday night.
Five people from the melee were treated for stab wounds and four guns were recovered.
