Following safety concerns raised by Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder (D – Breezy Point) and local community leaders, the Brooklyn Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced the installation of new LED streetlights along a once-dark stretch of Flatbush Avenue.

“So many families depend on Flatbush Avenue every day to get to work or school. Replacing the streetlights along this busy thoroughfare will ensure a brighter, safer commute and help prevent accidents,” said Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder. “I give tremendous credit to the Department of Transportation for making our families’ safety a priority, especially during these dark winter months.”

Last week, Assemblyman Goldfeder was informed by the DOT’s Brooklyn borough office that new energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) lights have been installed along Flatbush Avenue between the Belt Parkway and the Marine Parkway Bridge. The new lights will illuminate a stretch of the Avenue near Floyd Bennett Field where non-working lights plunged the area into darkness.

According to DOT officials, the installation is part of a multi-year city-wide program to upgrade lighting infrastructure and reduce energy use. The lights are expected to improve illumination along the Avenue and contribute to overall public safety.

In October, Goldfeder wrote to DOT Brooklyn Borough Commissioner Keith Bray to request the replacement of the lights after receiving numerous complaints from area residents. In a letter to the Commissioner, the Assemblyman cited numerous recent accidents along the major roadway, which is one of just three evacuation routes for a community that has seen two major flooding events in recent years. The new lights are a welcome change for local residents long concerned with the low visibility caused by the months-long blackout.

“Our families deserve to have essential infrastructure in place to ensure a safe community,” concluded Goldfeder. “With these new lights, our streets will shine brighter than ever.”
