New York City’s mayor and police commissioner are honoring two police officers who were shot to death one year ago while sitting in their cruiser.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner Bill Bratton plan to dedicate a plaque Sunday at Brooklyn’s 84th Precinct, inscribed with the names of officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos.
The two were shot at point-blank range through their cruiser window. The gunman then killed himself with the same weapon. He had posted on Instagram that he wanted to put “wings on pigs” and referenced Eric Garner, whose police chokehold death led to protests against the New York Police Department.
After the plaque ceremony, de Blasio and Bratton will lay a wreath at the intersection in Bedford-Stuyvesant where the shootings occurred on Dec. 20, 2014.
