The Gavra Seminary in Elad has been hit with a closure order. The school serves Sephardi girls in the city. The reasons given for the closure according to the Ministry of Education is the school was operating without a license.
As a result of the closure order parents of students turned to Elad Mayor Yisrael Porush asking where their girls will continue attending school. Porush has turned to Shas party head Minister Aryeh Deri and party MK Yosef Ben-Tzur for assistance, asking them to assist in finding a solution for the girls.
One is reminded that prior to the start of the current school year, Shas representatives in Knesset called on Porush to only operate one Sephardi girl’s high school in the city for the sake of achdus and eliminating the air of being among the elite that exists today. The request originated from the head of the Shas Moetzas Gedolei Hatorah, HaGaon HaRav Shalom Cohen Shlita. Porush met with a member of the party’s Torah Council, HaGaon HaRav Shimon Ba’adani, who concurred, instructing Porush to maintain one school. Despite the decision, there are parents who preferred sending their daughters to Gavra, which is operating without a license.
Elad City Hall is now faced with a dilemma, and officials are hoping to find a solution for the girls before Chanukah vacation ends.
