On Thursday morning 28 Kislev the annual Bituach Leumi report on poverty was released, reporting on poverty in Israel in 2014. According to the report, the number of poor in Israel increased in 2014, with chareidi elected officials pointing an accusing finger of Yair Lapid, who served as Finance Minister.
The poverty depth index rose by 6%, from 32.8% to 34.6% and the poverty severity index rose by about 10% in the general population.
According to the difficult and worrisome findings, in 2014, about 444,900 families or 1,709,300 people, lived under what is defined by the National Insurance as the poverty line. Of the total number, one-third of the ‘poor’ are children of which two-thirds are chareidim.
The poverty rate among chareidi families in 2014 was about 54.3%. The rate of poor persons in the chareidi sector was 59.7%.
The report submitted to Minister of Welfare Chaim Katz by Bituach Leumi Director-General Prof. Shlomo Mor-Yosef noted the figures reflect the cuts in child allowance payments since 2013 when Lapid was serving as Minister of Finance.
