Jerusalem Pilot Program: Electronic Parking Tickets

jptA new pilot program is about to begin in Jerusalem, in the coming weeks, which is unlikely to bring a smile to the faces of vehicle owners. A video camera will follow the actions of drivers and issue a parking summons remotely. A summons will be sent to the home of the registered owner of the vehicle.

The pilot will begin in areas including the center of the city, Golda Meir Blvd., Shamgar Street, areas of Ramot and the Talpiot industrial area, concentrating on areas with high accident rates, hoping to cut down the number of illegally parked cars.

The companies competed in the tender and it was awarded to the Cyber Place Company to launch the NIS 2.5 million program.

Officials do not plan to dismiss any of the city’s parking enforcement agents, but point out that if the pilot is successful and the plan expanded, the number of agents will be reduced at some time in the future.

  1. Good idea. As a driver, I take my life in my hands the way some others drive – I witnessed a near-miss accident yesterday where a speeding truck narrowly missed a car & ended up crossing the divider & facing oncoming traffic.

As a pedestrian, I almost got hit by a young driver as I was in the crosswalk after the truck incident. He wasn’t looking and carried on driving until his passengers yelled at him.

I drove in NY so in some ways I was prepared for Israeli drivers – in some ways!

  2. Yay !!! I drive in those areas, particularly Shamgar (Rav Shefa Mall), Golda Meir & Ramot.

There are so many drivers parked illegally, on sidewalks, double parked across crosswalks that walking is taking your life into your hands. It also means multiple lanes merging into one to pass these cars, particularly when the far right & far left are supposed to be turn lanes only. Therefore, you have drivers attempting turns from the middle (thru) lane. On Thursday night and Friday, the situation is incredibly dangerous to other drivers and pedestrians.

    Kol Ha’Kavod !!!!
