Two leading state senators have called a meeting to discuss proposals by Uber and Lyft to expand their services throughout New York state.
Republican state Sen. James Seward Sen. Joseph Robach will lead what they say is a “round-table” gathering to discuss how other states have regulated the car service companies. Robach chairs the Senate Transportation Committee and Seward leads the Insurance Committee.
Currently, Uber and Lyft operate only in the New York City area but both companies have said they would like to expand throughout the state.
Supportive lawmakers say they’re working on proposals to allow the companies to expand. Traditional taxi companies say the move could devastate their industry and put people out of work.
The Legislature is scheduled to convene in Albany in January.
