The NYPD shot an armed man in Crown Heights Wednesday afternoon, on Montgomery Street between Kingston and Brooklyn Avenues.
The following statement was given to YWN by the NYPD:
On Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at approximately 1215PM, a uniformed police officer, assigned to 71 Pct summons enforcement duty, observed a white 2015 Ford Mustang travelling eastbound on Empire Boulevard at a high rate of speed and driving erratically. The officer then followed the suspect in a marked police car with its emergency lights on and attempted to perform a traffic stop. In an attempt to flee from the officer, the suspect drove into oncoming westbound traffic on Empire Boulevard just before Brooklyn Avenue when he collided into a parked flatbed truck in the median of Empire Boulevard.
The 24 year-old male suspect then exited the vehicle and fled on foot northbound on Brooklyn Avenue from Empire Boulevard and then turned eastbound on Montgomery Street followed by the uniformed officer, also on foot.
While in front of 609 Montgomery Avenue the officer engaged the suspect, who was in possession of a firearm, and discharged his weapon striking the suspect in the torso.
EMS responded to the location and transported the suspect to Kings County Hospital in stable condition.
The officer was transported by EMS to Methodist Hospital for observation.
A loaded semi-automatic Ruger firearm was recovered at the location.
The investigation is ongoing.
