Jerusalem Councilman Pindrus: Councilmen Should Guard the Beis Yaakov

csgJerusalem Councilman Yitzchak Pindrus sent an urgent letter to the head of the city’s Emergency & Safety Division, Uzi Chen, decrying the lack of action pertaining to the Beis Yaakov School in Bayit Vegan.

MK Moshe Gafne recently sent a letter to Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, in which he referred to the Beis Yaakov as “a ghetto”, explaining there are many safety and security violations yet nothing is done.

Pindrus addresses the decision not to open a second entrance to the school, which would compel the city paying for a second security guard, Pindrus calls on city councilmen to step forward and volunteer to fill the void.

The lack of classrooms for chareidi girls in Kiryat Yovel compels them to attend the Bayit Vegan School too. Pindrus emphasizes the situation in the school in “intolerable”, accusing the city of buckling under pressure from the anti-chareidi movement in Kiryat Yovel as the expense of the chareidi community, which lives with ongoing budgetary discrimination.

Amid an awareness that the school desperately needs another entrance, Pindrus suggests city councilmen fill the void along with members of the “Free Kiryat Yovel” anti-chareidi NGO that has blocked a chareidi school in that neighborhood.

  1. One of the major functions of elected representatives is to supervise the police.

When a person is elected he is elected to be the person with the gun. A councilman or mayor need not personally carry the gun and can give it to somebody else, provided the person is under his (the elected representative) direct command and supervision.

If the wrong person get’s control of the gun, he can use it as a license to commit murder and robbery. Robbers and murders are not interested in doing traffic duty at a girl’s school or even responding to citizen complaints of anti-social behavior.

If this sounds like the criminal justice system of today, it’s because we have profoundly misunderstood what democracy really means. One of the things it means is who we give the gun to. If somebody screams “I’m frum” or “us vs. them”, you shouldn’t expect them to do the job that well.
