NYPD Promises Crackdown on Dangerous Driving

nypdThe NYPD is devoting more officers to traffic enforcement following a string of pedestrians killed by cars.

New York City officials say hundreds of officers and traffic enforcement agents will be part of the crackdown on dangerous driving through Nov. 22.

Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office said Wednesday that the police would commit more than 12,000 extra enforcement hours a day to traffic safety.

De Blasio is trying to reduce the number of pedestrians killed by vehicles with his Visio Zero plan.

But more than a dozen New Yorkers have been killed or injured by cars, buses and trucks in the last two weeks.

  1. The way to solve this problem is to alter the lights to that there is a period in the cycle when pedestrians are in the crosswalk when no traffic is moving in any direction, and no pedestrians are in the crosswalk when traffic is moving in any direction. Most of the accidents occur when a car is turning.

  2. perhaps if they started ticketing pedestrians who flaunt traffic laws and jaywalk, cross against the light or in the middle of the street we might have less fatalities.
