Tomato prices are finally beginning to drop after reaching close to record-highs during Sukkos. Prices on Wednesday 24 Tishrei dropped 10-20% in some areas.
While the price is heading down, the price is still high, ranging from NIS 6.90 to NIS 12 or more for a kilogram. However the government realizes for most Israelis, tomatoes are a staple and therefore the Ministry of Agriculture is going to subsidize importing tomatoes from Turkey.
Farmers are protesting, questioning why imported tomatoes are being subsidized while local produce remains at the high price, which is due in no small part to the record-breaking heat this summer.

Can someone explain to me why heat reduces tomato production ?
I always thought the tomato was a heat loving plant.
12 shekel a kilo?! We’re paying 18!
