Magen David Adom officials report that on Tuesday 23 Tishrei, cats and dogs donated blood at a Ra’anana veterinary center and simultaneously, their owners donated blood to MDA.
MDA mobile blood bank units were on hand to receive the owners of the pets, who gave blood at the joint event. It is explained that as humans require blood at times, the same holds true for cats and dogs due to accidents, illness and other causes.
MDA officials explain that they seek to accommodate the unique request from Ra’anana officials in the veterinary center for the annual event, now in its fourth year, permitting owners of the pets to bring them; permitting them and their beloved pets donate blood.
Dr. Ofir Tzadok of the veterinary center explains “I am happy to see the respectable response of cat and dog owners to donate blood. This is very significant towards extracting blood components that will save other dogs and cats in the future, exposing a lovely side of Israeli citizens, who discovered the genuine desire to donate blood to assist sick and wounded people. I was pleased to see bystanders on the street seeing the mobile blood bank and taking the time to stop and donate blood…”
Prof. Eilat Shinar, who heads Israel’s blood bank services explains this was the fourth year the joint event is held.
