Last night, Councilman David G. Greenfield hosted Kings County Democratic Party Chairman Frank Seddio at a sukkah gathering at the home of Renewal Chairman Mendy Reiner. Over one hundred Jewish community leaders and elected officials attended including directors of local nonprofit organizations and school leaders from across the city including Public Advocate Letitia James, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, District Attorney Ken Thompson and New York City Council Members Mark Treyger, Vincent Gentile, Corey Johnson, Mathieu Eugene, Jumaane Williams, Alan Maisel and Mark Levine, chair of the Council’s Jewish Caucus, joined last night’s festivities. Additionally, New York State Assembly Members Steven Cymbrowitz, Walter Mosley, Roxanne Persaud and Senator Jesse Hamilton were in attendance, along with Judge Steven Mosoftksy and Pam Harris, Democratic Nominee for the 46th Assembly District. New York Police Department Captain Kenneth M. Quick, Sergeant Michael Andreano, Lieutenant Robert Delaney and Detective Michael Melici from the 66th police precinct were there as well.
The gathering, which Councilman Greenfield hosts every year, is a wonderful introduction to the meaningful Jewish holiday of Sukkos. “Every year we open our sukkah to community and elected officials in the tradition of hachnasas orchim so that our elected leaders can learn more about this important yom tov and strengthen relationships with our community leaders,” explained Greenfield. “I’m especially thrilled that we are honoring one of the great political leaders in New York – Chairman Frank Seddio. Frank has been a great friend of the Jewish community going back to the days when he was a community affairs officer for the NYPD. Since then he has put Brooklyn back on the political map.”
Chairman Frank Seddio spent the evening speaking with many prominent leaders of the Brooklyn and Jewish Communities and spoke movingly of his relationship with the late Lubavitcher Rebbe Rabbi Menachem Schneerson. “Bringing people together is what makes Brooklyn so great. Thanks to my friend Councilman Greenfield for inviting us all here tonight to celebrate Sukkos together.” Seddio also pledged to do all in his political power to help pass Greenfield’s bill that would provide security guards for all non-public schools including yeshivas.
Greenfield also acknowledged many of the Jewish leaders in attendance including Rabbi Chaim David Zweibel, Executive Vice President of Agudath Israel of America, Jerry Greenwald, Publisher of the Jewish Press, Mrs. Ruth Lichtenstein, Publisher of Hamodia, Rabbis Chaskie Rosenberg and Heshie Dembitzer of Bobov, Rabbi Moshe Indig of Satmar, Jeff Leb, Managing Director of the UJA-Federation, Doug Jablon, Vice President of Maimonides, Ronnie Tawil, Chairman of the Sephardic Community Federation, Jake Adler, Political Director of the Orthodox Union and Barry Spitzer, District Manager of Community Board 12, David Pollock of the JCRC, Joel Eisdorfer, Board Member of the Economic Development Corporation and Rabbi Joe Potasnik the Executive Vice President of the New York Board of Rabbis.
Chairman Seddio is a staunch supporter of Councilman Greenfield’s Introduction 65, which would provide security guards to all non-public schools that want them in an effort to protect all school children. Introduction 65 has the overwhelming support of New York’s diverse religious communities and a super majority of the New York City Council. As of today, 45 of 51 members have signed onto Greenfield’s bill. The bill has received additional support from Public Advocate Letitia James, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, the Orthodox Union, Agudath Israel of America, the UJA-Federation, the Sephardic Community Federation, the Catholic Community Relations Council, the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens, the Archdiocese of New York, the Muslim Community Network, the Islamic Schools Association of New York and the NYS Association of Independent Schools.
