Deputy ISA Director Tapped to Become Next Israel Police Commissioner


roniDeputy ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) Director Roni Alshich has been selected as the next commissioner of Israel Police. the selection follow candidate Gal Hirsch dropping out of the race. Alshich, 52, is a resident of Givat Shmuel and the father of seven and grandfather of seven. He is currently serving as deputy director of the intelligence service.

According to an Ynet report, Alshich’s code name in the ISA is “Bar Mitzvah” because he wears a yarmulke and his ‘childish’ appearance. Another name used to refer to him as “The Fox” due to his sly image. His trademark appearance is his yarmulke and tie and is reportedly “an outstanding guy”.

Alshich has been serving as deputy director since September 2014 and has served in four other posts in the ISA which are reportedly the equivalent of a major-general in the IDF.

The Turkel Committee which must approve the appointment is set to meet on Thursday, 18 Tishrei. It is reported the appointment is likely to be approved and that Alshich will take command of Israel Police within two weeks.

  1. He must be properly vetted specifically by United Torah Judaism. Satisfactory answers must be given to how he will respond to Haredi demonstrations, Shabbos violations, allegations of government corruption against religious politicians, army draft issues, etc.

    It would also be interesting to hear his take on the differences between Ger and the Neturey Karta.

    Supervision of the police as well as sanctions and dismissal of corrupt cops must be explicitly dealt with.

    Also it must be clearly known how he can be dismissed if he does not perform properly.

    Civilian control of the police is what democracy is all about. If the police chief is hostile or incompetent, it is best to leave the coalition and work for new elections.
