Israel: Rider on an Electric Bicycle Fined for Speaking on his Cell Phone

mishPolice in Israel are continuing enforcing new laws pertaining to the operation of electric bicycles, which are growing rapidly in popularity in cities including Yerushalayim and chareidi areas where many cannot afford a vehicle. One rider, from Betar Illit, was stopped and fined NIS 1,000 for speaking on his cellphone while operating the electric bicycle.

The incident occurred last week when the chareidi male was caught speaking while riding his electric bicycle. The man told Kikar Shabbos News that the battery in his Bluetooth ear piece died so he was holding the phone and he was detected by a policeman. He showed the policeman the ear piece but he was issued the summons. He now explains he never rides without using the Bluetooth device.

Recent regulations pertaining to the operating of an electric bicycle also compel one to drive in the street, not on sidewalks, and to wear a helmet.
