YidClick: The Jewish Alternative to Amazon Shopping

Like many a successful business, Yidclick was a brainchild born of personal frustration.

“Two years ago, Erev Purim,” shared Mr. Hirsh Traube, “I was asked to purchase a large selection of ready-made mishloach manos packages in many price ranges. One store had a dozen that were perfect for the top tier but lacked any affordable options, while another had ones that were affordable but they were short five pieces. All night, as I parked and re-parked, I wondered why there wasn’t a simpler way to do this. Why couldn’t there be a platform where I could select, shop and ship from a variety of stores?” In the brief pause, I hear the smile forming, “So since there wasn’t an option out there….I decided to go for it myself.”

As someone who shops almost exclusively online due to my work schedule, I am a self-appointed web critic. This groundbreaking site, though, has me intrigued and engaged. The design is modern and easy to navigate and the search tool makes finding just about any product a breeze. For the kicks of it I search for a shtender. As multiple styles from different sellers pop up, I am incredulous. ” You have become my personal shopper and hunted for the best buy!”

I now scroll the varied selection and choose the one I like best. Then, I decide to add a set of Chumashim into my cart and some children’s books. The tab “Tzum Gezunt” catches my interest and I throw in another bottle of vitamin D. Then, I check out Tick Tock Toy where I find everything from sensory toys to backpacks! Pots N Gadgets, the virtual housewares department, is where I begin to form my Wishlist—I absolutely love their extensive bakeware line! And I wish I’d known about Round Buttons before I flew out to Israel and needed another shell but had no time to shop for it.

I am heady with excitement as I discover that there is an alternative to standing on line at frum stores. But first let’s talk financials:

” So how do your prices compare to that of the stores? And how much will shipping tack onto my bill?”

Mr. Traube explains that he’s not only kept the prices competitive with brick and mortar stores, in many cases he’s beat their rates because he’s handpicked the seller who has the best price point. And in terms of shipping “$59 entitles you to free shipping. In some areas that can mean same day delivery and in other cases next day. We ship anywhere in the US and Canada.”

Now, I just have one pressing question: “What about school uniforms?”

He laughs and tells me that he’s been getting that request from many customers and likely will have it added to the selection within a short span of time. “I’m so glad to get requests from consumers. We actually have a form for them to fill out so that they can put in requests. Honestly, though, we’re flooded with ideas from both sellers and consumers. Right now we’re beginning with the 200,000 items that we’ve listed and hope to add the rest slowly as we continue to grow.”

The Accidental Launch

I wonder aloud when this best-kept-secret launched and again, there’s a fabulous story.

“So I was working on the website for nearly two years with a team of developers and designers. It was almost all ready to launch but I hadn’t put it out to the public yet when my friend called me in absolute frustration. He was coordinating a weekend getaway and needed 500 negel vasser sets, havdalah candles, momentos and a whole lot of odds and ends. He was experiencing a lot of what I had two years prior, running around from place to place, finding steep price differences and not enough of each item to fill his need. I shared my secret project with him and asked him if he’d like to have a look. Within ten minutes, he’d ordered it all in the quantities he needed. So though we hadn’t planned it, this was our foray into the industry. Our public soft-launch was shortly before Pesach of this year.”

What Next?

“We hope to launch our Israeli and European versions of the site. Think of a mother being able to shop for her couple living 6,000 miles away and have the items delivered to their door– it’s a game changer in the frum world.” shares Mr. Traube. “We hope to keep adding more and more items that fit right into the frum lifestyle to best service our customers.”

“Another wild idea that we are toying with is adding contracted vendors like photographers or bands to the mix. Consider the idea that you could book simchah vendors efficiently and easily. ”

I continue browsing the site absorbing what I’ve heard and what I see as I navigate the ten categories and get my credit card ready. This year’s Yom Tov shopping spree just got a whole lot more fun and streamlined.
