A truck traveling on the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv Highway late Thursday morning 26 Elul led to the closure of the highway in both directions.
A truck traveling towards Yerushalayim caught fire and the fire spread to the forestry area next to the roadway. The rapidly spreading fire had heavy smoke conditions as it spread quickly, compelling authorities to evacuate a number of homes in Motza as the flames spread. Police announced the closure of the highway in the direction of Jerusalem shortly before 11:30am, as well as the evacuation of residents of areas of the community.
As the fire continued spreading police closed the highway in both directions and police cars blocked the entrance to the highway at the exit to Jerusalem. Vehicles on Highway 1 were rerouted to Mevassert Tzion.
The highway was reopened after noon, shortly after firefighting officials declared the blaze was under control. B’chasdei Hashem there were no injuries and the fire was contained before spreading to homes. Fire Department officer Reuven Yitzchaki explained to the media that property damage was minimal and no homes were damaged, just some property outside.
