Hundreds of enthusiastic kids and their smiling parents turned out recently in front of Klein’s Ice Cream House in Boro Park celebrating the culmination of Senator Felder’s and BINA Stroke and Brain Injury Association’s innovative and wildly popular “Want An Ice-Cream? Wear A Helmet” campaign.
“This was a fun and educational way of teaching them bike-safety and also making them aware that wearing a helmet is the law,” said Senator Felder, who personally handed out hundreds of ice creams and bike safety certificates to the happy children.
The Senator, along with Mrs. Chavy Glustein, founder of BINA Stroke and Brain Injury Association, conceived the idea as a means of stressing to kids and their parents the importance of taking safety precautions and obeying rules while bike-riding. “I have gotten far too many calls regarding children whose serious head injuries could have been prevented had they worn their helmet,” said Mrs. Glustein.
Joining the festivities were the FDNY with a fire-truck and ambulance, NYPD Police Officers, the Borough Park Shomrim and Misaskim Command Centers, as well as a Hatzola ambulance which the curious kids (and even some parents) were able to inspect and explore. New York City Councilman David Greenfield dropped by the event, helping Senator Felder hand out the free ice-cream to all those who brought coupons stating that they wear a helmet whenever they ride their bikes.
Said one excited child: “My favorite thing to see was inside the ambulance and Hatzalah truck. It was exciting to see the real ambulance bed and emergency stuff. I also liked the free ice cream too!”
Live music provided a lively background as clowns and face painters made this a day the kids would not soon forget.
“Our kids are our greatest treasure,” noted the Senator. “Teaching them the basics of bike riding safety, like always wearing a helmet, will hopefully ensure their well-being for years to come.”
