MK (Yesh Atid) Aliza Lavie has contacted Justice Minister Eyal Shaked requesting her intervention to make sure the appointments committee does not appoint dayanim who are related. Her party and other coalition members were determined to prevent such appointments in the previous Knesset and now that it appears this is going to occur, she is fighting to prevent it once again.

In her letter to the minister Lavie explains the nation’s batei din have lost the trust of the nation and appointing new dayanim who are related to currently serving dayanim is not the way to regain that trust. Back in 2014 the appointments committee would not discuss the appointment of a number of qualified candidates because they are related to currently-serving dayanim.

Lavie is now aware that Shaked has given her backing to changing this, approving the position of Rishon L’Tzion Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef Shlita who is not opposed to appointing dayanim related to dayanim already serving.

Shaked’s office responded to the media explaining a decision as to appointing related dayanim has not yet been made.
