A key vote is due on a controversial petition that would allow the Chasidic Village of Kiryas Joel in the Hudson Valley to annex more land.
Board members in the Orange County town of Monroe are scheduled to vote Tuesday night on a request to allow Kiryas Joel to annex up to 507 acres of town land. The boards of the Hasidic village haven’t said when their mayor and trustees will vote on the annexation petitions.
Leaders of Satmar say the village needs the additional land, but many people in the surrounding suburbs fear more congestion.
The proposal would ultimately have to be approved by people living within the annexed area, which is populated by Satmar who requested the annexation.
