A third member of the Darawshe family has died of her injuries sustained in the arson attack in their home in the PA (Palestinian Authority) village of Duma. The fatal attack took place at the end of July 2015, killing a one-year-old. The father, Saeed, 31, died of his massive burns in Sheba Medical Center some 10 days after the attack and now, the mother, Riham has died.
While PA officials immediately place the blame for the attack on ‘settlers’, based on statements released by Duma villagers, the investigation and the fact there was another fire in the village in another homes belonging to the Darawshe family in an ongoing feud lead some to believe the tragic attack was perpetrated by PA residents, not Jews.
Riham died during the predawn hours of Monday, 23 Elul with her family present. Still hospitalized at Sheba Medical Center is Ahmed, 4, who was gravely injured. Doctors report there is a slight improvement in his condition.
In response to the death, the PA has declared Friday, 27 Elul a “Day of Rage” throughout Yehuda and Shomron. A ‘Day of Rage’ translates to attacks against Jewish residents and Israeli security forces in those areas. The violence generally spreads to eastern areas of the capital and Jerusalem’s Old City.
The Prime Minister’s Office released a statement “Prime Minister Binyamin expresses his condolences to the Darawshe family following the death of Rihad Darawshe who was critically wounded in the act of terrorism in Duma. The Prime Minister said that the security forces are doing their utmost to apprehend the assailants and bring them to justice”.
US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapira used Facebook to respond to the death, issuing the following statement. “Deep condolences to the family of Riham Darawshe, who died of her injuries in the terrorist arson on her home in Duma. Our thoughts and prayers are wish her surviving son, Ahmed. It is important that those responsible be brought to justice”.
Security forces came under attack by villagers during the early afternoon hours ahead of the funeral. They were compelled to use riot-control measures to restore order.
