Jerusalem Municipality regulations permit loud noise until 23:00 but if a new effort is successful, the mayor will be granted the authority to extend this time to 01:00.
Councilman Aryeh King is among the staunch opponents to such a move. King insists that before the mayor can be given blanket authority parameters must be set into place, professional parameters including a maximum decibel level.
King, who heads the city’s Environmental Affairs Committee explains there are already too many complaints regarding too much noise and he does not see how anyone wishes to extend the time amid such a realization. He explains “over half of the environmentally related complaints are over excessive noise”.
King convened an urgent meeting of his committee to discuss the matter. That meeting will take place on Sunday, 22 Elul. He calls the request “bizarre” and “unfitting”, insisting even if the mayor is given authority there must be parameters to set a maximum decibel level as well as ensuring there is a system of enforcement in place.
“We must devise a system that guarantees quality of life for residents as there are already too many complaints regarding excessive noise” he concludes.
