Rav Yisrael Levine, principal of the Beis Yaakov HaYoshon was summoned to the Education Ministry for a hearing and faces harsh sanctions over his refusal to accept 21 girls assigned to the school by the city’s chareidi education unit. Taking the offensive, R’ Levine took his case to the Jerusalem District Court, seeking to plead his case in court instead in front of ministry officials.
The court rejected Levine’s position and refused to issue a temporary injunction freezing the situation. He ordered the school to register the girls immediately, by day’s end. Attorney Tzabari, who presented the school’s position, informed the court the girls in question will be notified of their acceptance to the school today.
The court rejected Levine’s contention that the decision not to accept the girls is not discriminatory as he explained he cut the size of classes. The court feels the decision was entirely discriminatory and ordered the school to accept the students immediately.
Once it became crystal clear to Rabbi Levine that the court was not in the least bit sympathetic to his position, the decision was made to pull the petition.

It is so tough for parents who do not fit the cookie cut, to get their kids in schools that the disappointment has even contributed to a suicide r”l. How can we go into Rosh Hashana like this!!!
the situation is sick. a school has a responsibility to teach and accept whoever wants to learn. Elitism is ruining many communities. But on the other hand, we do need more schools. Problem is that schools get labelled if they dare accept anyone “not as holy” as the rest of them.
Just to add perspective… there are THIRTEEN parrallel 9th grades (yes, just 9th grade) and my daughter is in the smallest one… 41 girls in her class! so far 🙂
Such craziness
But honestly anyone who is familiar with the “Yashan” knows they are very strict with the type of girls they take and their chinuch is intense.
The real question is are these girls themselves suitable but external circumstances such as family or eidah are the reason they weren’t acceoted? Or is this just stuck up exclusive policies?
