Next Target in ‘Kedushas HaMachane’ Battle – Taxi Screens

monitThe Vaad Rabbonim for the Purity of the Camp has launched a new battle in its ongoing war against unacceptable technological devices. This battle targets viewing screens in Israeli taxis, which the vaad refers to as posing a serious danger to passengers. Hence the vaad is instructing those who use taxis to seek out ‘kosher cabs’.

The rabbonim point out that with today’s advances in technology, there is a growing number of taxis equipped with viewer screens which they explain show unacceptable content to passengers. They explain their concerns are justifiable, especially when it comes to young passengers who would be exposed to unacceptable advertisements on these screens.

The vaad is confident that when taxi drivers in certain areas are made aware passengers will not use their vehicle because of the screens they will opt to have them removed. Therefore the vaad calls on the chareidi tzibur at large not to use taxis with screens installed until such time the message is clear. It is explained when one calls for a taxi on the phone one should tell the dispatcher he must send a vehicle that does not have advertising screens operating in the vehicle.

  1. Moose,

I am disgusted by your disrespect for the Rabbanan. be careful on Yom Hadin and make teshuva now.

If you want to drown your own neshama in Shmutz go ahead, but don’t attack those trying to protect other people’s.

  2. And why should anyone, no less a conscientious yid who is careful of what their eyes see and their ears hear, be subject to a display of “anything goes” just because they want to ride in a taxi? Even if the content is completely “kosher” (and that is a big assumption), the rider should be able to choose between these cabs and others.

  3. Lately, it seems that every day someone issues a new ban on something. first smartphones, then bicycles, then monkey bars, then smartphones that use kosher sim cards, now taxi screens, etc. Frankly, I, and I’m sure many others no longer care what any of these so-called Rabbonim have to say anymore. They have lost total legitimacy. Even yesterday, when I saw the kol-koreh signed by Rabbis Solomon, Kotler, and Kamenetzky regarding kids who do not get vaccinations. They are imposing whatever beliefs they have on the rest of us and it’s getting worse by the day. With all due respect, why are they sticking their noses in medical issues? There are plenty of doctors who know what benefits vaccinations bring. I prefer to listen to them in these matters. Perhaps the esteemed Rabbonim should stick to “Daas Torah” and not “Daas-Medicine”.
Trust me, one day very soon, some idiot will ban pizza because it’s goyish. Enough is Enough!

  4. I understand that people should be careful about what they watch and what their children watch. Your typical chiloni would also be able to understand that people want to be careful about this.
But trying to force taxi drivers to conform to their standards is not going to be viewed favorably by the same chiloni – or even by more modern people (as the comments above show clearly).
Why is there a necessity to boycott these taxis entirely – just ask the driver to switch the screen off? That way no-one need be left with the impression that the Rabbonim are trying to force their ways on others.

The bottom line is that the more rules are made with justifications which many view as flimsy – phones with no texts for example – the less respect people have for Rabbonim generally. This then detracts from Rabbonim’s ability to make guidelines about things which are important (eg unfiltered internet etc).

  5. No. 5 – No Rabbonim pretend to have Daas Medicine. They are simply saying that hishtadlus for refuoh (something which is part of Daas Torah) is dependent on the generally accepted medical opinion.

No-one will argue with the fact that the standard medical opinion is that vaccinations are very helpful. I’m sure you can find lots of information about this online, try wikipedia for a start.

The frum yeshivish kehilla is generally/often uneducated about medical/scientific things and is therefore prone to illogical beliefs and anecdotal evidence. There is also a certain yeshivish gaavo that the doctors don’t know anything. So the Rabbonim thought it necessary to state that actually mainstream medical opinion is what is koveia (decides) what ones hishtadlus should be.

  6. I’m sure that if it’s as easy as it sounds to ask the driver to shut down the screen there wouldn’t be much of an issue. Perhaps people don’t know about it until they enter the car? It is obviously making them uncomfortable.

  7. Yes pizza should be banned, but my credentials only allow me to eat it and not condem this goyish Italian food that may have originated when some rasha threw some cheese and possibly meat on some matzot baking in an oven on erev Pesach. Consider the scenario where some baal habayit listening to the rabbis did not vaccinate their child. The child then gets a viral encephalitis as a result of becoming ill from one of the diseases the vaccine could have prevented. He then as a result of the encephalitis begins to imagine things. His mother is making pizza and spreads all of the toppings. Suddenly the young child starts imagining all kinds of things that he sees in the topping. Pepper slices become arms and legs, mushroom appear to be ears, etc.The resultant evil thoughts plus the dubious origins of this food have more than justified keeping it off menues of true yeiri shamaym. Hopefully my wife will throw out our pizza pans before yom hadin

  8. Huge protest against Boyswork! How dare you speak like that about our Rabbanim! That’s not something you want to play with. I would take down the comment if I were you. Your playing with fire!
