Nechama, a chareidi woman with three children living in a chareidi community in the Jerusalem area, has been accepted to a course to become certified as an El Al pilot. According to the Yediot Achronot report, she is a graduate of Beis Yaakov in Yerushalayim and began learning to fly at the age of 20 in the USA, where she received her pilot’s license.
While having all of the required documentation and licenses to enter the course she was lacking a number of flight hours. Many if not most of the candidates entering the course are former Israel Air Force pilots and therefore they have accumulated sufficient flying hours. Apparently it is difficult to accumulate the required number of hours as a civilian pilot.
Nechama remained undeterred and traveled to the United States annually until she accumulated the required number of hours in the air and she has since been accepted to the course which begins in November 2015.
Yediot adds that Nechama explained she has always dreamt of becoming an El Al pilot. The report adds that El Al officials’ who interviewed here were most impressed with her skills and abilities.
Nechama is quoted telling her friends “My husband backs me all the way towards realizing my dream”.

Will the haradim get on a plane if they know that a woman is the pilot?
Awesome!
#1. They probably will. But they probably won’t if they know you’re a passenger.
Good for her!
Think e/o dreams of either being a fighter pilot or senior El Al pilot. Kol hakovod.
“towards realizing my dream”
More like a nightmare.
Why is this newsworthy? I’m confused.
Nechama! No last name. A chareidi community. Which community? Don’t get the story. JUAT SAYING!!
Letakein #7: It is newsworthy when a woman wishes to publicly show her manhood. Especially if she calls herself frum. Gender bending has always caught the public interest.
I love flying. Congratulations!
@7. Womens’ liberation.
This seems like a great way to make a living. It’s probably more relaxing than spending those hours in a house full of little ones.
To the one thinking it would be a nightmare, that would apply to being a stewardess on EL AL
Is there a Yichud problem in the cockpit?
is there YICHUD issues being locked in a room with a copilot due to security concerns?
So that parents who plan on sending their daughters to schools in Elad should request kosher flights – male pilots only.

Have u ever read a newspaper or magazine? There are different sections “headline” ‘metro’ ‘community’ ‘sports’ ‘science’ ‘features’ ‘travel’ ‘money’ ‘health’, etc.
Feature articles are found in different parts of the paper, most readers find this type of post interesting….sorry u dont!
A Chareidi co-pilot would ask to have his seat changed… 🙂
Flying is not gender-bending.
For all who are concerned about yichud… Why do we assume that there are no other female co-pilots with whom she could fly?
And, no, pursuing a challenging career and a passion has nothing to do with gender-bending. There is nothing in this article that suggests that Nechama (a married mother of three) is doing anything of the sort unless you subscribe to a very dim view of women in which they must all be the same.
