AGAIN – Jerusalem: 40-Year-Old Man Arrested for Spitting at Teenage Girl Dressed Immodestly

mishA 40-year-old man was arrested by police in Yerushalayim on Sunday, 1 Elul on suspicion of spitting at a 15-year-old girl who he thought was dressed immodestly. The incident took place near the Clalit HMO building on Strauss Street near the center of town. The girl was walking with members of her family when the man, Yosef Chaim J. (name on record) spat at her.

Family members summoned police, who arrested the man who was arraigned in the Jerusalem Magistrate Court. Police requested holding the man in custody until Wednesday, 4 Elul. Defense attorney Talya Rom called on the court to separate a feeling of disgust and the actual act, which does not demand imprisoning the suspect. The prosecutor told the court that such a person may pose a danger to the public at large. The court agreed to remand the suspect, but only until Monday, 2 Elul until 18:00 after which he was set free with restrictions.

  1. That’s one sure way to mske her and her family become interested in Mitzvos; no?
The guy is a fool and deserves lock-up time!

  2. This news is going to attract alot of people to submit their comments here on yeshiva world. Which may cause people to perhaps post politicaly questionable comments. No one has the right to speak strongly in a offensive way. We dont know exactlly what happened we were not their. For all you know the man that spat was mentally challenged and just spat to spit at a person and not bec of how she dressed. Who knows! We must realize its ellul before we decide to post our comments. Before i conclude i just want to say yes i dont agree that anyone should spit at anyone. But try to chill on the comments and again you dont know exactlly what happened. Have a ksiva vechasima tova!

  3. It is time to get the root cause of these attacks. Who is the offender’s Rov or Rosh Yeshiva? Can we ask this person’s spiritual leader to make a public statement in response to his followers actions? Let’s make it clear to these offenders that they are acting on their own and that what they are doing is against the will of the rabonim.

  4. A friend of mine was was approached by a girl who introduced herself as “the tznius police” and told that her dress was too tight/short etc . needless to say, she was very angry and purposely wore the dress many times as if to announce, who do you think you are? Moral of the story, if you really care about people and want them to change for the better, make sure your approach will have the desired results, or say nothing. Set a good example. Then go home and pray for them to see the truth. Spitting on people I would assume has the opposite effect, so this man is both a sinner and a fool.

  5. shlomo76 perhaps before preempting/reprimanding the commentators with your dan lekaf zechus speach, you should reprimand the headline writers at YWN for assuming the worst of the victim: “at Teenage Girl Dressed Immodestly” Who says she was dressed immodestly? Is there an objective standard? So far, according to this website, she is the only one who has done something wrong.

  6. There’s definitely more to the story. The location in this story is a very secular street where most women are dressed immodestly. Also most people wouldn’t call the cops to get someone arrested because they or a family member were spat at in the street.

  7. Not condoning spitting on anyone. However, I am sad and embarrassed to report that i have been spat upon by secular Israelis (maybe Arabs?) more since moving to E.Y. than ever happened to me in the U.S. And I do not go out in the street dressed immodestly.

  8. In Meah Shearim yesterday, I saw a young couple strolling along. He was in shorts, she was wearing a VERY short dress, sleeveless, no stockings & a sunhat with all her hair up. Nobody looked at them, spat, said anything…but when some nutcase does something it’s like we are all responsible.
