A new poll finds a majority of registered New Jersey voters surveyed think Gov. Chris Christie should resign as he mounts a run for the White House.
Thursday’s Rutgers-Eagleton poll finds that 54 percent want Christie to step down.
However, that number drops to 45 percent when participants are told about a law being floated by Democrats that would force the Republican, and all future governors, to resign if they run for president.
Fifty-three percent of voters also think Christie’s constant out-of-state travel hurts his ability to be an effective governor.
Christie has spent much of the summer out of town, fundraising and courting potential voters in early-voting states.
The poll of 757 registered voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.0 percentage points.
