New York’s governor and attorney general are meeting with U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and state lawmakers to discuss the state’s response to the killing of unarmed civilians by police.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Attorney General Eric Schneiderman will participate in what they’re calling a round-table discussion Monday afternoon with Jeffries and members of the state’s Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus.
Last month Cuomo signed an executive order directing Schneiderman’s office to investigate and potentially prosecute cases involving killings by police or the deaths of civilians in police custody.
Schneiderman created a special prosecutorial unit to handle the cases. The team’s first investigation is into the death of Raynette Turner, a 42-year-old woman who died last month in a police holding cell in Mount Vernon.
