Rockland County Legislators Considering E-Cigarette Ban

ecigLawmakers in a New York county where smoking indoors is already prohibited are considering adding a ban on e-cigarettes.

The Journal News reports Rockland County officials held a public hearing Tuesday night to discuss the expansion of the county’s smoking restrictions to treat electronic cigarettes like traditional tobacco products.

Legislator Aney Paul, a Nanuet Democrat who authored the proposal, says she’s alarmed by the chemicals contained in e-cigarettes and is concerned by the increase in “vaping” by young people.

The bill would ban use of e-cigarettes in areas already covered by the state’s 2003 Clean Indoor Air Act – which includes offices, restaurants, schools, sports facilities and government buildings.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control says the number of teens using the tobacco alternative tripled between 2013 and 2014.
