Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) is urging pedestrians and bicyclists to use caution when utilizing the Ocean Parkway Malls. Assemblyman Hikind recently allocated $6 million for signage and other improvements along the stretch of Ocean Parkway. The allocations are part of the NY Works program and supplement the existing State Road and Bridge Capital Plan.
“Along with my colleagues, I was proud to allocate millions of dollars for Ocean Parkway to protect bicyclists and pedestrians and to improve road safety. For years, while walking with my mother I witnessed many potential accidents. The signage has been enhanced tremendously. But I am still seeing pedestrians carelessly walking in clearly designated bike lanes at risk of colliding head-on with bicyclists. Whether it’s children, elderly individuals, or mothers with strollers, walking in the bike lanes is extremely dangerous. In addition, the pedestrian path on the eastern side of Ocean Parkway clearly indicates, “No Biking” but I continue to see bicyclists ignoring these signs. As you take advantage of the beautiful weather, I caution everyone to be cognizant of where you are walking or cycling. The mere sight of potential accidents is frightening but preventable,” stated Hikind.

Its nice that your busy with Ocean Parkway relating to bike issues.
Why is there no bike lanes in Boro Park. There are many people around here that would like to bike with their kids & are hesitant because of the fear of being doored.
We want safe bike lanes in Boro Park!
Where on 13th Ave. Or on 15 Ave. Between 43 and 44 or on 46 between New Utrecht Ave. And 12 or between 13 and 14 ???

Bike Lanes?
When I was a child we rode horses on the Ocean Parkway malls. We would rent them in Prospect Park and when I would reach the block between Ditmas and Cortelyou my Zaidah and great uncles would be on the park benches in front of #441 and they’d have carrots or an apple for the ‘nice ferdelah’
I have been commuting by bike on Ocean Parkway for many years. Hikind’s statement of the problem is totally accurate. Countless times (practically always) there are mindless pedestrians wandering or just standing in the bike lanes. Often they are pushing baby carriages right down the center lane, or even worse, walking little children on both sides, spreading across the whole lane.
However, I have not yet seen his alleged solution about the signage actually appear. Notice the picture – all of the signs only forbid bikes from the pedestrian lane or from the entire East mall. There are NO signs that warn pedestrians to stay off the bike lanes.
While we are on the topic, some of those blocks have horrible cracks and potholes that make it a miserable bike lane.
We do not want bike lanes in Boro Park. There is hardly any room for the cars to drive by. people are so careless, they don’t look at the lights or to see if a car is approaching. They just cross no matter what. I always look before I enter a street. But not the people of today. They think they can just mosey into the street pushing their strollers ahead of themselves. It’s. Lot eSier to wait a minute, then for a four ton vehicle to stop suddenly, just because someone is busy on their phone.
