Israel: Right-Winger Compensated for Being Humiliated in Lockup

prisonThe Jerusalem Magistrate Court has accepted an agreement reached between the Jerusalem Prosecutor’s Office and attorney Itamar Ben-Givir. Police are instructed to compensate Ben-Givir’s client in the amount of NIS 37,000 for humiliation suffered during imprisonment.

The story began in February 2013 when police destroyed a home in Maale Rechavam. Right-wingers protested outside the Knesset and on Begin Highway in the capital leading to five arrests including a resident of Maale Rechavam, Danny Chalamish. They were transported to the Russian Compound detention center.

In his petition to the court, Ben-Givir explains that during his incarceration an illegal search was conducted on his client and others, who were instructed to remove their clothing without cause. Guards warned detainees of consequences if they did not comply. Ben-Givir documented how his client was humiliated while in police custody.
