New York’s attorney general has tapped a veteran prosecutor to lead the team investigating cases in which police kill unarmed civilians.
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman tells The Associated Press Thursday that Alvin Bragg will lead the new Special Investigations and Prosecutions Unit. Bragg is currently Schneiderman’s executive deputy attorney general for social justice and a former assistant U.S. attorney.
Four other prosecutors will serve in the unit, which was created after Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order Wednesday directing Schneiderman’s office to review killings by police.
The unit will investigate and potentially prosecute cases involving the killings of unarmed civilians by police or when there are questions about whether the slain civilian was armed and dangerous.
Schneiderman says the team will evaluate each case impartially.
