Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) praised Governor Andrew Cuomo for vetoing Assembly Bills A07629 and A07639. These bills would have stunted the natural growth of Kiryas Joel, a Hassidic community within the town of Monroe in Orange County.
“I applaud Governor Cuomo for doing the right thing. The Governor has shown true leadership, sending the message that discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated. No group should be singled out or targeted because they are different.”
Assemblyman Hikind has been involved in the issue of the Kiryas Joel annexation from the beginning. “I vowed not to give up. Today is a great victory for the Kiryas Joel community. Kiryas Joel owes a debt of gratitude to Governor Cuomo for not shying away from this issue and standing up for its residents.”

Congratulations for Governor Cuomo doing the correct thing.
I don’t know much about Assemblyman Dov Hikind, but I know he has lots of opponents and doubters among the YWN commenters. I don’t know too much about the issues underlying the proposed expansion of Kiryas Joel, but I suspect that Mr. Hikind was an opponent of the political/legislative attempt to burden the annexation process and prevent it. And so, I suppose that supporters of Orthodox Jews should recognize that Mr. Hikind evidently intervened in the KJ political matter, and did something good for the Jews.
