Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) praised NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo this morning for his leadership on the issue of Education Investment Tax Credits. “Thanks to Governor Cuomo, New York State got closer than ever before to providing relief to parents of children in religious and parochial schools,” said Hikind. “Just a few more inches and we’ll be there.”
In a letter addressed to the Governor, Hikind noted that Cuomo’s efforts this last legislative session, which ended last week, made it clear that the Governor was pursing genuine justice and equality for more than 400,000 students who attend New York State private and parochial schools.
“Under your leadership, New York State continues to prove that education is a top priority,” wrote Hikind. “Sadly, year after year, one segment of New York’s population continues to remain left out of the equation. Once more, the coming school year will find parents who opt to send their children to religious and private schools still in need of some relief. But you have told these parents that you have not forgotten them—that their plight is part of your agenda.
“As you well know, the amount of money that private and parochial schools save New York State is truly astronomical. Having New York State give something back to these parents and provide the much needed relief that they deserve is more than reasonable. It’s fair. As you have said, it’s just.
“While Education Investment Tax Credits did not become a reality this past legislative session, you have clearly moved the needle on this issue and I am confident that with your continued leadership, Education Investment Tax Credits will become a reality in the coming session. I look forward to working with you on this issue.”
