Hikind Outraged at American Flag Burning in Brooklyn Scheduled For Tonight

DOV-HIKINDAssemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) condemned a plan to burn an American flag at Brooklyn’s Fort Greene Park by a group calling itself “Disarm NYPD.”

“This is just a sick effort to get negative attention,” said Assemblyman Hikind. “Even the name of this group is disgusting. The last thing that we need in the Borough of Brooklyn, or for that matter the City of New York, are people purposely undermining the police.”

The group announced that it planned to burn both the Confederate Flag and the American Flag near the park’s Prison Ship Martyrs Monument off Myrtle Ave. and Washington St. at 7:30 p.m.

“These people should be ashamed of themselves,” said Hikind. “And if they’re not, the rest of us are certainly ashamed of them.”

  1. But if they were going to burn a “Palestinian” flag, then it would be OK, right?

I am not condoning the burning of the American flag, c”v – just saying that Hikind’s reaction would almost certainly be very different if it were a different country’s flag.

  2. Thank you, YWN editors, for announcing the location of a demonstration that Mr. Hikind has denounced. I would be there to applaud the burning of the Confederate flag (which I prefer to call the Flag of Treasonous Armed Rebellion in Defense of the Abomination of Slavery (FOTARDAS)), but I am fearful of attending any public event where fire is on the bill. It may even be illegal to burn stuff in public, if you are not a Grucci.

  3. Dov, do something legislatively like tuition relief instead of constantly being outraged at everything.
