abThe Board of Directors of Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty (Met Council) unanimously appointed Abraham Biderman as President. Steven Price, Met Council’s current Board President, will continue to serve on the Executive Committee as a Co-Chair, and current board member Joseph Allerhand will assume the role of Vice President. The changes are effective July 1.

Biderman brings broad experience in government, not-for-profits and financial services. He is currently the Chairman of Eagle Advisers, LLC, a diversified financial services and money management firm and previously worked for the Koch Administration as a Special Advisor, Commissioner of Finance and Housing as well as Chairman of the Housing Development Corporation. Biderman joined Met Council’s Board of Directors in 1990.

“I am honored to join Met Council Board of Director’s Officers, as well as Met Council executive staff, including, CEO Alan Schoor, in leading such a critical institution,” said, Abe Biderman. “I am humbled to follow the dedicated and hard working Steven Price as President of Met Council. In the coming months, we will build on our portfolio of culturally sensitive programs that help lift people out of poverty.”

Price has served as Met Council’s President since 2011 and been a board member since 1999. Under Price’s leadership, Met Council launched new privately-funded meal programs; hired more social workers to assist clients in financial crisis and additional handymen to repair the homes of needy seniors; solicited applications on our new affordable housing development in the Bronx; and piloted new program models to help New Yorkers enroll in public benefits. In addition, Met Council has improved governance, operational, and financial controls.

“During the past two years, we have worked incredibly hard to ensure that our clients remain our top priority,” said Steven Price. “I’m honored to join Met Council’s Co-Chairs. Abe’s passion and commitment, together with our new CEO, Alan Schoor, will ensure that Met Council continues to fulfill its mission.”

As Vice President, Joseph Allerhand brings a depth of legal knowledge as a partner at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, where he co-heads the firm’s securities litigation practice. He joined Met Council’s Board of Directors in 2011.

“I am excited to join Met Council’s Board of Directors Executive Committee,” said Allerhand. “Together with our new CEO, Alan Schoor, our government partners, and UJA-Federation, we will continue to defend our City’s most vulnerable and create dignified solutions to overcome the many barriers faced by poor and near-poor New Yorkers.”

“I look forward to working closely with the Board Officers,” said Alan Schoor, Met Council CEO and Executive Director. “With more than 500,000 poor and near-poor people living in Jewish homes in New York City, it is not only our mission, but also our obligation to redouble our efforts in serving these vulnerable New Yorkers.”

While proudly serving all New Yorkers in need, Met Council is a unique provider to the Jewish poor. There are more than 500,000 people in poor and near-poor Jewish households in New York City. Met Council services are a lifeline to these vulnerable populations, providing immediate relief and lasting solutions to the problems they face.
