During a session of the Knesset Science & Technology Committee, committee chair MK Uri Maklev warned that if Israel does not begin implementing the technological advances available to assist visually disable citizens today, the nation will not be able to catch up to the technological innovations available.
The committee met on Tuesday 22 Sivan and conducted an in-depth discussion on the various technological advances available to the visually impaired community. Maklev explained this was the first session of the committee for him as chairman, reminding participants that he will emphasize the social services aspect of science and technology during his tenure, as is the case with making technology available to the disabled to facilitate their lives. He stated this is particularly true regarding accessibility for the disabled.
Maklev stated the technological advances are developing at a rapid pace while the state lags behind and if action is not taken immediately, tomorrow it will be increasingly difficult to bridge the gap between what exists in Israel and the technology available for the disabled. Maklev feels that when it comes to accessibility for the disabled the cost factor may not be a hindrance for accessibility is a basic right and need that must be made available to all.
