On May 23, 2015, at 02:30 in the morning on Shavuos night, two youths were moderately wounded in a stabbing attack near Shar Shechem in Jerusalem’s Old City. An Arab male pulled out a knife and attacked them. The terrorist fled as the youths ran to get away from him.
Two youths affiliated with Breslov were wounded, ages 16 and 17, residents of the capital. Police worked with the ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) in the investigation, arresting 20-year-old Jon Kakish, a resident of the Old City. The suspect is not married and works in a local bakery.
It is now permitted to report the suspect told interrogators that he wanted to injure Jews. He was apprehended with the assistance of the Old City’s extensive video surveillance system. The video shows him pulling out the knife as well as him fleeing the scene has he tossed his jacket and knife. Police add the he purchased the jacket a day earlier at one of the vendors in the Shar Shechem area a day prior to the attack. He told authorities that he is aware there are cameras in the Damascus Gate area and that is why he threw away the jacket. He also shaved in the hope of throwing police off his trail. In a look at the Facebook page in his name there is a post calling on Arabs to come to Jerusalem to “free Palestine”.
Jerusalem Police Chief Moshe Edri praised the work of investigators. The suspect’s detention was extended at the arraignment hearing until Sunday, 20 Sivan.
